Make your 1:24 and/or 1:43 scale Back to the Future Delorean actually float in mid-air using a magnetic platform and magnets. This option may not be the cleanest looking, but you can achieve the same effect as the higher-priced models.
(Optional - take apart your model and make a hole on the bottom big enough to fit the magnet so it can be somewhat more recessed).
I've used other magnets ranging in size and strength, but found that this combination works pretty well. If you have more knowledge working with magnets and find a better match, feel free to comment.
I spent a total of $90 for the 1:24 version and an additional $40 for the 1:43 version.
