Program Note:
When astronauts enter space and see the Earth in its entirety—a small ball in blackness— they notice the small band around our planet. That band is all of the air we breathe and everything we know. There is a cognitive shift in perspective experienced from being so far away from it all; it's called the Overview Effect, when everything that seemed so large is suddenly so small.
As we began planning our world premieres, we sought to start our collaborative process by looking at something beautiful and unique from far away, to translate distance within art forms like music and dance that deal mostly with time. As it happened, Zaria Forman had flown over the arctic and antarctic with NASA to capture in pastel ice worlds from our wildest imaginations. The resulting effect from her work is stunning and inspired all of us to travel deep into creative mode.
In developing this program, BalletCollective and The Knights sought to join together and produce an evening neither could on their own. We are immensely proud of the collective of artists who have joined together to make this evening possible.
