Labor to back JobKeeper scheme despite legislation stoush

Labor to back JobKeeper scheme despite legislation stoush Labor frontbencher Tony Burke says the opposition will pass the government’s JobKeeper plan despite an ongoing stoush over finer details of the legislation.

A messy procedural debate between the two parties erupted on Monday after Industrial Relations Minister Christian Porter said Labor was “mad” for objecting aspects of the subsidy program.

The government had been under pressure from unions and Labor to expand the definition of casual workers and to pursue the $1500 a fortnight programme via the Fair Work Commission.

Mr Porter on Monday ruled out any movement on both issues.

Later, Shadow Industrial Minister Tony Burke conceded his party would “not let the perfect be the enemy of the good”.

"We called for a wage subsidy. They said that they didn’t want one. We kept demanding it. Eventually, they said - OK, there will be a wage subsidy, and we have welcomed that,” he said.

"The discussion since then is simply - how can we make it as effective as possible.

"We’re not going to let the perfect be the enemy of the good."
