One third of Australian workforce propped up by govt subsidies

One third of Australian workforce propped up by govt subsidies More than one-third of the Australian workforce is currently receiving government wage subsidies, Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg is set to address the National Press Club on Tuesday, where he will outline the impact the policy has on more than 4.4 million workers.

Mr Clennell said the Treasurer will use the address to stress the temporary nature of the program.

“It is expected he will stress that the measure is for six months and six months only,” Mr Clennell said.

"Overall there have been 749,000 applications, of which 40 per cent are from sole traders and 39 per cent are from companies.

"Perhaps surprisingly, 14 per cent of workers covered are from construction, 15 per cent are from professional scientific and technical services and 14 per cent, as you would expect, are from retail and accommodation and food services.”

It's on top of the 800,000 people who have applied for the JobSeeker payment since the lockdowns were put in place.
